Get Ready for Your Trip - Baggage

The following rules and reccomendations are valid only on flights operated by Oceanair Linhas Aéreas S/A (O6).
If you have a leg on your itinerary operated by another companhie, please check the terms and conditions with the operating company.

Carry-on baggage

It is the baggage transported free of charge by adult or child passengers in the cabin, under their own responsibility. All volumes that may be placed in the appropriated compartment, according to definitions below are considered carry-on baggage:

Maximum weight: 5 kg.

Size: 115 cm, summing the three dimensions, being at the most 40 cm Length + 55 cm Height + 20 cm Width.

If those limits are exceeded, the baggage should be dispatched.

Items accepted as carry-on baggage:

  • One handbag, briefcase or piece of equipment that may be placed under the passenger seat or in a specific compartment inside the aircraft;
  • An overcoat, mantle or blanket;
  • An umbrella or walking-cane (not pointed);
  • Eletronic equipaments;
  • Reading material to be used during the flight;
  • Baby food for consumption during the flight;
  • Crutches or orthopedic equipment used by the passenger.

Items to be transported in the carry-on baggage:

  • Money;
  • Securities;
  • Documents;
  • Electronic equipment and accessories (mobile, camera, notebook, palm, walkman, video camera, etc.);
  • Medical Drugs
  • Fragile objects;
  • Valuables;
  • Keys, etc

The transportation of carry-on baggage should always obey the weight and volume limits imposed by Decree 676 of ANAC.

Articles and Equipment Prohibited for Air Transport

  • Guns: any firearm; hunting weapon; replica or imitation of gun, including firearm-shaped lighter; "paintball"-type gun or similar; diving gun; gun parts (excluding lunettes); pistol or air rifle; sports starting pistol; signal pistol; industrial pistol; device capable of generating electrical current (shock device); crossbows; brass knuckles.
  • Sharp or cutting objects: saber, scissors, dagger, sword, knife, multifunctional object, with sharp, folding or retractable, metal or not, blade with length over 6 cm, not considering the handle or other handhold area; elongated metal or not blade, with rounded tip, with no cutting gable, with length over 10 cm; claw and razor, excluding device in cartridge; equipment for practice of martial arts; blade skate; tools such as: drill, retractable cutter, saw; harpoon and spear; arrow, dart, iron hook, ax, ripple, spur; ice catcher and picker; stylet, screwdriver; cleaver and jackknife; skiing rod; hypodermic needles (except if there is medical prescription); knitting needle and weaving needle.
  • Rounded-tip instrument: lever or similar metal bar; tools such as: hammers, pliers, wrench; sports material that may contribute to threat, such as oar, skateboard, fishing rod, stick, baton and billiard, snooker, baseball, polo, golf and hockey bats, etc.; ramrod; batons and equipment for practice of martial arts.
  • Explosive or flammable substances: explosive capsule; smoke generator shell; detonator and fuses; blasting fuse; explosive and replica or imitation of explosive; beacon and gunpowder; pyrotechnic material and fireworks; aerosol of any substance, except those for medical usage and personal neatness; beverage with over 70% of alcoholic contents standard, per volume; instantaneous ignition or combustion material; matches, except for units wrapped in casing for daily usage; flammable solid, such as matches and easy-ignition items, in any amount; flammable liquids (ex.: gasoline, diesel oil, methanol); substance that, in contact with water, emits flammable gases; munitions and projectiles; compressed gas of any type, such as: butane, propane, extinguishers and oxygen cylinders in any amount and containers; mines, plastic explosives, gunpowder, dynamite, explosive military materials and grenades.
  • Chemicals and toxic substances: oxidant material, such as lime powder, chemical bleach and peroxide; chlorine for pools and bathtubs (Jacuzzi); corrosive material, such as mercury, acid, alkaloid, battery with corrosive liquid, whitener, in any amount (exclusively instruments for thermal measuring - thermometer); infectious or biologically dangerous material (e.g.: infected blood, bacterium or virus); radioactive material (medicinal and commercial isotopes); paralyzing sprays (pepper and tear); poisonous (toxic) and infectious substances, such as arsenic, cyanides, insecticides and defoliants in any amount and fire extinguisher
  • Miscellaneous: alarms (excluding devices of watches or electronic equipment accepted on board); and material whose magnetic field is sufficient to interfere in the aircraft equipment and that are not mentioned among the electronic devices allowed, such as mobile, laptop, palmtop, electronic games, pager, which have controlled usage on board.

Note: some items will only be dispatched through Avianca Cargo, after its evaluation and approval. The Service Agent will be responsible for evaluating the content and indicating the best procedure for transportation. Always inform the content of your baggage at the check-in

Perishable Products

Perishable and food products, such as fish, crustaceans and other seafood, fresh or frozen, should be placed in leak-proof packages, which prevent incidental opening or stink.

The product should be packed internally in leak-proof plastic bag and the external package should be made of Styrofoam coated with a resistant plastic bag. The ice for conservation should be gel and be into a plastic bag isolated from the product.

If the package is inappropriate and if it is verified that it may damage the plane or baggage/cargos of other customers, Avianca reserves the right of not authorizing its transportation.

Restricted Articles

  • Medical drugs or toiletries necessary for the trip, transported as carry-on baggage or dispatched. The total amount of those articles per passenger may not exceed the limit of 2kg or 2 liters and the amount included in each pack may not exceed the limit of 0.5kg or 0.5 liters;
  • Smokers' articles for personal usage, excluding the lighters such as liquid flammable devices (lighters), which will be accepted only when transported together with the passenger's body, never as carry-on baggage;
  • Avianca does not accept dry ice as carry-on baggage, dispatched baggage, neither together to the passenger. Dry ice  is only accepted by the Avianca Cargo.
  • Alcoholic Beverages – ranging between 24% and 70% of alcohol per volume, in containers that do not exceed 5lts (five liters), in a maximum amount of 5lts (five liters) per person. The origin of the beverage should be the industry, once, in that case, there is a technician in charge who follows the determinations of the S.I.E or S.I.F. concerning the criteria of the alcoholic contents measurement and that information will be certainly shown on the label of the package. It is necessary that the containers are well placed and the usage of the protect bag is mandatory. Avianca does not provide this package, thus, the passenger is responsible for arranging it.
  • Beverages (liquid in general) – Every beverage to be dispatched should be from the industry and labeled. E.g.: juices, vinaigrettes, olive oils, soft drinks, water and others.

Checked Baggage

Baggage carried in the hold of the aircraft.

Domestic flights
The baggage allowance established by Avianca Brasil on domestic flights are:
Adult – 23 kg.
Child – 23 kg.
Infant – 10 kg*.

International Flights:

O6 International flights (operated by Avianca Brasil), ex. FORBOGFOR:
Economic: 1 or 2 pieces of up to 32kg.
Business: 2 pieces of up to 32kg (total of 64kg).

O6* Codeshares and Interline International Flights (operated by other airlines).

Economic: please check with the airline operating the flight.
Business: please check with the airline operating the flight.

 

 

* For infant (lap) passengers, a completely folding baby stroller, or a basket or baby transporting chair may be transported on board, depending on the availability of space and provided that the flight safety is not affected. If it is dispatched in the hold, it will enter in the infant (lap) allowance – 10 kg.

 

Articles and Equipment Prohibited for Air Transport:

Avianca does not transport oxygen cylinder, be it made of iron or aluminum.

Advance Purchase of Excess Baggage

If you need to take extra kilos on your journey (please check your baggage allowance) you may be able to purchase excess baggage allowances in advance.

This service is available exclusively through the Sales Center by telephone at 4004-4040 (São Paulo and main state capitals) or 0300-789-8160 (other locations) up to 24 hours before your flight*.

A fee will be charged according to the extra weight (5kg, 10kg, 20kg or 30kg).

Conditions for the purchase of excess baggage:

  • The excess cannot be endorsed by or transferred to another passenger.
  • It cannot be used on flights with different departures and/or destination locations.
  • A 10% fine will be charged on the reimbursement amount, if a refund is required. A partial refund regarding the amount of unused kilos is not allowed (for example: an extra 10kg was purchased and only 5kg was used).
  • If the flight is rescheduled, you can still use the same service, provided that there are no alterations in the departure or the destination locations and the change is done before the flight's original date.

*Excess baggage purchases within less than 24 hours before the flight departure time must be done at Avianca's shops, located inside airports.


Special Baggage

Specific rules apply for some special items. Transporting of items not specified in this site is subject to prior analysis and acceptance by Avianca. Avianca reserves the right to refuse transportation of any luggage which puts flight security in danger. Refusal may occur due to weight, dimensions, or because item type is not recommended for aerial transport. For instance, musical instruments, sports baggage or any bulky items of baggage that cannot be transported in the cargo hold. For more information, please contact us through the number (11) 4004-4040. All items must be adequately packaged to be accepted as baggage. Attention! The information below only applies to itineraries operated by Avianca. In case your trip has connection with another airline, always check their own baggage policy. The sum of dimensions of each volume (height + width + length) must not exceed 158 centimeters or 62 inches. Volumes with dimensions superior of 158 centimeters (height + width + length) must be transported as cargo. Please contact Avianca Cargo central. Sports equipment which measure more than 230 centimeters (90 inches) or weight more than 45 kilos, can only be transported as cargo and are subjected to the applicable policies. All equipment listed bellow is part of the free baggage allowance and is subjected to charges for excess weight, quantity and/or dimensions.

  • Transporting a violoncello: Due to the instrument's fragility, a violoncello has to be placed in the passenger cabin on a separate seat (just like a regular passenger).

    Conditions: The cello case must be hard in order to avoid possible damage to the instrument, passengers or crew; Reservation and payment must be accomplished ahead of time through our reservation center; Restrictions: Transporting a violoncello does not confer the passenger the right to another free baggage allowance; Dimensions (height + width + length) cannot exceed these measures: 1.60m + 0.70cm + 0.60cm; Maximum weight, including the instrument case, must not exceed 75kg.


  • Bow and arrows: The bow, arrows and maintenance equipment should be placed in a package capable of protecting the articles from all damage.

    Restrictions: Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, will not be accepted. In case equipment exceeds weight and dimensions restrictions, excess luggage charges will apply, and transporting the equipment will be subject to space availability.


  • Bicycle: For leisure or competition, with a single seat, without engine, and with pedals detached and handlebars fixed to the side. All items must be properly packaged

    Restrictions: Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted.


  • Bowling: Restrictions: Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted. In case equipment exceeds weight and dimensions restrictions, excess luggage charges will apply, and transporting the equipment will be subject to space availability.

  • Ski and snowboard: Items accepted: a pair of ski, two poles, boots and shoes. The passenger has to pack properly all ski and/or snowboard equipment, so as to protect it well. In case the equipment is not well protected, the passenger will be liable for any possible damage.

    Restrictions: There is no quantity limit for this type of sports equipment. Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted. In case equipment exceeds weight and dimensions restrictions, excess luggage charges will apply, and transporting the equipment will be subject to space availability.


  • Water ski: Items accepted: a pair of ski, two poles, boots and shoes. The passenger has to package properly all ski and/or snowboard equipment, so as to protect it well. In case the equipment is not well protected, the passenger will be liable for any possible damage.

    Restrictions: There is no quantity limit for this type of sports equipment. Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted. In case equipment exceeds weight and dimensions restrictions, excess luggage charges will apply, and transporting the equipment will be subject to space availability.


  • Golf: Golf clubs and a golf bag are accepted, as long as they are completely protected.

    Restrictions: Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted.


  • Scuba diving: Oxygen cylinders will not be accepted.

    Items accepted: a manometer, a snorkel, a harpoon, a pair of fins, a life jacket, a weight belt, a regulator and a mask. The high intensity underwater or diving lights will only be accepted if the heat-generating battery component has been packaged separately, preventing its activation during transport. All loose batteries must be protected against short circuit.

    Restrictions: Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted. Sports equipment which measures more than 230 centimeters (90 inches) or weights more than 45 kilos may only be transported as cargo and is subjected to the applicable policies. In case equipment exceeds weight and dimensions restrictions, excess luggage charges will apply, and transporting the equipment will be subject to space availability.

     


  • Fishing: Items accepted: a pair of boots, net and fishing pole. The passenger must properly package all fishing equipment, so as to protect it well. In case the equipment is not well protected, the passenger will be liable for any possible damage.

    Restrictions: There is no quantity limit for this type of sports equipment. Damaged packaging, or packaging incapable of resisting handling, as well as damaged equipment, will not be accepted. In case equipment exceeds weight and dimensions restrictions, excess luggage charges will apply, and transporting the equipment will be subject to space availability..


  • Surf and Windsurf: There is no limit against the loading of boards on the aircraft, observing the maximum of two boards in a single case up to three meters long.

    Restrictions: Packaging that is damaged or unable to withstand dispatch procedures will not be accepted; nor will damaged equipment.


  • Kayaks and Canoes: Avianca does not transport kayaks and canoes.

  • Home appliances: Due to their weight and dimensions, some items cannot be transported on Avianca flights, such as:

    Stoves, washing machines and similar items: These types of equipment should be transported as cargo. In such case, please contact Avianca Cargo Central to verify the necessary requirements.

    Refrigerators and freezers cannot be transported due to the gas they contain, which is considered dangerous for the airplane. For more information, please contact Avianca Cargo Central.

    Microwaves, mixers, coffeemakers and other home appliances can be transported both as carry-on and checked luggage. They should be properly packaged and observing the necessary standards. We remind you that transportation of any such item may be refused in case of irregularity.

    Television and/or Monitors. 1 (one) television set or monitor per passenger is permitted, up to 32'' and 23kg. These devices are part of the free baggage allowance. Televisions sets and/or monitors must be placed in appropriate boxes to maintain their integrity.


  • Animals, vegetables, and their parts: The Ministry of agriculture and food supplies warns that it is prohibited the entry on Brazilian territory of any animal or vegetable, including food, seeds, veterinarian products or pesticides, without import authorization and sanitary or phytosanitary certification. This prohibition aims to prevent introduction of plant pests and animal illness agents which could compromise sanitation and agricultural production in Brazil. Please check the applicable rules and necessary forms on the website of the Federal Revenue department and present yourself at the International agricultural surveillance after retrieving your luggage.

Baggage Excess

The baggage excess will be charged, whenever its weight exceeds the allowance granted. The calculation and charge will be carried out directly at the airport.

Avianca National Flight's Baggage: The maximum weight allowed for the baggage is 23kg per passenger on domestic flights operated by Avianca Brasil (O6). The baggage that exceeds this weight will be considered excess baggage and 0.5% per kilogram (KG) will be charged, calculated from the normal coach fare, with no discount (YXBO6).

Avianca International Flight's Baggage: The maximum weight allowed for the baggage is 32kg per passenger on international flights operated by Avianca Brasil (O6). The baggage that exceeds this weight will be considered excess baggage and 0.5% per kilogram (KG) will be charged, calculated from the normal coach fare, with no discount (YO6).


Codeshare and Interline flight: For information regarding excess baggage on codeshare and interline flights, please consult the airline responsible for the flight.

Objects subject to previous approval for transportation

Some objects should be approved by the airline before transportation due to their weight, size and type of baggage. The following are subject to approval:

Surf Boards are accepted for boarding and, for that, the following recommendations should be observed:

  • Only up to 02 (two) packs per flight, containing up to 02 (two) boards within each pack. Thus, it is necessary to make a request to the reservation control, in order to verify the availability in the flight.
  • The boards should be wrapped in packs proper for their transportation and, at the time of dispatching the baggage, the pack will receive the label "fragile" and the passenger will sign a liability term.
  • Boards with maximum length of 2 meters are accepted. Long boards are not accepted.

The transportation of bicycles is limited to 5 per flight, provided that they are disassembled and properly packed (the iron parts should not be apparent), with flat tires and the handlebar toward the frame. It is necessary to request confirmation of the service through the Sales Call Center or on the website at least 48 hours before the flight intended. After confirmation of the service by the Sales Call Center, you should be at the airport two hours before takeoff.

  • Some musical instruments;
  • Art objects (statues, paintings, sculptures, etc.);
  • Fragile or perishable items (accepted provided that properly packed);
  • Live animals (depending on the route, flight duration, animal size and place available for it). See more details at Transportation of Animals in the Cabin.

Baggage Allowance of international flights on national connections with Avianca*


Avianca's customers on domestic flights and arriving or boarding on international flights operated by partner airlines Interlineand/or Codeshare have the same baggage allowance as the partner company responsible for the longest international route. Passengers entitled to this feature must meet all the following criteria:

  • Arriving or boarding on an international flight operated by a partner airline with a domestic connection with Avianca; the connection must be on the same ticket for the baggage allowance to be honored.
  • Travel on an international flight with Avianca's partner airlines. Star Alliance companies and all other airlines that have an Interline and a Codeshare partnership with Avianca are included in this group.

NOTE: The baggage allowance of the company responsible for the international flight must be stated on the customer's ticket. Any additional baggage allowance (complimentary) related to the mileage program of other companies can't be redeemed.
